Why this spot
1861-1924 quartz gold mine camp
John Hite's quartz mine on the South Fork Merced River, with a 40-stamp mill, hotel, store, garden and a Chinatown, home to over 100 people in the 1860s. It produced about $3 million, most before 1900, and the settlement buildings burned in 1924.View source →
