Why this spot

1830s-1890s rubber and shoe mill village

Mill village on Spot Pond Brook where Nathaniel Hayward and Charles Goodyear worked on vulcanization and made rubber boots, coats, pails and spittoons. It declined as larger firms and steam power took over and nearby cities took its water rights, and the state bought it in 1894.View source →
