BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Massachusetts · approx. 42.52, -70.9 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1890s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Salem Harbor and the North and South rivers on Massachusetts Bay

What turns up: East India trade and tannery-era refuse: dark olive black-glass wine and gin bottles, apothecary and snuff bottles, imported ceramics and export porcelain shards, stoneware, and clay pipes around Derby Wharf and the harbor edge.

Access: Gray area.

Under the Massachusetts colonial ordinance private ownership reaches to the low-tide line, so Salem's harbor flats are largely private and require the owner's permission. The bed of the navigable harbor is public trust where removing historic material is restricted. Townsite uplands are private, and state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
