Why this spot: Medieval to modern
What turns up: Clay pipes, pottery and glass, coal-era debris and canalised riverbank material; the Dee below the Chester weir is tidal and carries redeposited town waste along the artificial New Cut.
Access: Gray area.
The tidal Dee foreshore is Crown Estate land; the river within Chester is managed under city and Environment Agency controls. Eyes-only searching is generally tolerated, but the wider Dee Estuary downstream is a SSSI, SPA and Ramsar site where metal detecting and digging are restricted, so keep to non-designated banks and check locally before detecting. Report Treasure under the 1996 Act.
