Chemical Beach (Dawdon), Seaham, County Durham

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA DOCUMENTED

Where: England · Europe · approx. 54.83, -1.32 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: mid-19th to early 20th century

What turns up: Sea glass and industrial slag, bottle fragments and 'chemical' waste glass just south of Seaham harbour, named for the chemical and glass works that once tipped here alongside colliery spoil.

Access: Gray area.

Publicly accessible beach reached on foot from Seaham; loose sea glass on the foreshore is fine to collect. The backing cliffs and former industrial/colliery ground are unstable and often littered with sharp metal and slag, so sturdy footwear is needed and digging into the banks is neither safe nor allowed.
