Vauxhall / Nine Elms foreshore (Thames, south bank)

BOTTLE DIGGING RESTRICTED DOCUMENTED

Where: London · Europe · approx. 51.49, -0.13 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: Prehistoric (Bronze Age timber structures) to Roman and Victorian

What turns up: prehistoric worked timber and flint context, Roman and later ceramics, clay pipes, industrial debris

Access: Restricted.

The exposed Bronze Age timber piles near Vauxhall are archaeologically sensitive; do not disturb, and keep clear of Vauxhall Bridge and the MI6 frontage. Tidal foreshore: a PLA foreshore permit is required, and as of 2025-2026 new applications are paused (wait list over 10,000), so no new permits are being issued; check pla.co.uk before searching.
