Why this spot: 1849 Ordnance Survey town plan era
What turns up: Heavy Victorian dump material from a major port: stoneware ginger beers, aerated-water and soda bottles from Leith and Edinburgh bottlers, black-glass ale, porter and whisky bottles, ships' glass and clay pipes; Leith and Edinburgh glassworks output including green-glass wine and beer bottles.
Access: Gray area.
Scotland's rule is report everything: any object of any age can be Crown property under bona vacantia and Treasure Trove and MUST be reported to the Treasure Trove Unit at the Crown Office, unlike England's narrower treasure law. Leith foreshore and the docks are Crown Estate Scotland or port-authority land, so permission is required before any searching or digging.
