Dumfries (River Nith quays and Whitesands)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Scotland · Europe · approx. 55.07, -3.6 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1850 Ordnance Survey town plan era

What turns up: Market-town and river-port refuse: stoneware ginger-beer bottles, aerated-water and soda bottles from Dumfries bottlers, black-glass whisky, ale and wine bottles, Codd and Hamilton sodas, transfer-printed pot lids and clay pipes along the tidal Nith banks and the Whitesands frontage; good exposure at low water.

Access: Gray area.

Scotland's report-everything rule applies: any object of any age can belong to the Crown under bona vacantia and Treasure Trove and MUST be reported to the Treasure Trove Unit at the Crown Office, unlike England. The tidal Nith foreshore is Crown Estate Scotland; the non-tidal river bed and banks are largely private and need the landowner's permission.
