Under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 any place associated with pre-1900 human activity is an archaeological site. Picton's pre-1900 port and town dumps are protected; it is an offence to dig, damage or modify them without an archaeological authority from Heritage NZ on public or private land. Post-1900 material still requires the landowner's permission, and Maori sites and taonga must never be disturbed; report any taonga found.
