Under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 any place associated with pre-1900 human activity is an archaeological site. Petone's early settlement (1840 onward) foreshore and riverbank dumps are pre-1900 and protected; digging, damaging or modifying them without an archaeological authority from Heritage NZ is an offence on public or private land. Post-1900 material needs the landowner's permission, and Maori sites and taonga must never be disturbed; report any taonga found.
