Under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 any site associated with pre-1900 human activity is an archaeological site. Onehunga's pre-1900 port-era tips and hotel dumps are protected, and digging, damaging or modifying them without an archaeological authority from Heritage NZ is an offence on public or private land. Later post-1900 rubbish still requires the landowner's permission, and Maori sites and taonga must never be disturbed; report any taonga found.
