Under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 any place associated with pre-1900 human activity is an archaeological site. Naseby's 1860s goldfield dumps are pre-1900 and protected, so digging, damaging or modifying them without an archaeological authority from Heritage NZ is an offence on public or private land. Post-1900 material needs the landowner's permission; Maori sites and taonga must never be disturbed and any taonga found must be reported.
