Under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 any site linked to pre-1900 human activity is an archaeological site. Dunedin's 1860s gold-boom reclamations and yard pits are almost all pre-1900 and protected, so digging, damaging or modifying them without an archaeological authority from Heritage NZ is an offence on public or private land. Post-1900 fill still needs landowner permission. Maori sites and taonga must never be disturbed and any taonga found must be reported.
