Under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 any site linked to pre-1900 human activity is an archaeological site. Clyde's 1862 onward Dunstan goldfield dumps are firmly pre-1900 and protected; it is an offence to dig, damage or modify them without an archaeological authority from Heritage NZ on public or private land. Post-1900 material needs landowner permission, and Maori sites and taonga must never be disturbed; report any taonga found.
