Under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 any site tied to pre-1900 human activity is an archaeological site. Christchurch's dense pre-1900 back-section privy and rubbish pits are protected, so digging, damaging or modifying them without an archaeological authority from Heritage NZ is an offence on public or private land. Post-1900 deposits still need landowner permission. Maori sites and taonga must never be disturbed and any taonga found must be reported.
