Under the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Act 2014 any site tied to pre-1900 human activity is an archaeological site. Arrowtown's 1860s goldfield and the riverside Chinese settlement are firmly pre-1900 and protected; digging, damaging or modifying them without an archaeological authority from Heritage NZ is an offence on public or private land. The Chinese settlement is a managed historic reserve and must not be dug. Post-1900 material needs landowner permission; Maori sites and taonga must never be disturbed and any taonga found must be reported.
