Northern Ireland has its own, stricter law. Under the Historic Monuments and Archaeological Objects (NI) Order 1995 it is an offence to search for archaeological objects, including with a metal detector, anywhere in NI without a licence from the Department for Communities Historic Environment Division (HED), not just on protected sites. This differs from the rest of the UK. Treasure must be reported under the Treasure Act 1996, and the tidal foreshore is largely Crown Estate, so permission is also needed.
