Winnemucca, NV: Humboldt River freight and rail town

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Nevada · approx. 40.97, -117.74 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1890s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Humboldt River

What turns up: 1870s-1900s freighting, saloon, drugstore and Chinese-quarter bottles and ceramics along the Humboldt River bank and the old business district

Access: Gray area.

The bed of the Humboldt River below the ordinary high-water mark is state-owned public land, and removing historic artifacts from it can run afoul of Nevada's antiquities protections. The old townsite and the banks above the high-water line are generally private property and need the current owner's permission. Any surrounding open desert is likely federal BLM land, where disturbing a site older than 100 years without a permit violates the federal Archaeological Resources Protection Act. Confirm land status and get permission before digging.
