BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Vermont · approx. 43.48, -72.39 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Connecticut River and Mill Brook

What turns up: An early industrial town (machine-tool birthplace) on the Connecticut with an 1884 Sanborn. Probe Mill Brook and the Connecticut riverbank near the old shops and the Main Street back lots for pontiled medicines, blob sodas and stoneware.

Access: Gray area.

The bed of the Connecticut River below the ordinary high-water mark is public-trust land where artifact removal is restricted, and the river is an interstate boundary; the banks and town lots are private and need the landowner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
