Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Cape Fear River
What turns up: Pontiled antebellum medicines, blob-top and Hutchinson sodas, and torpedo bottles along the old Water Street wharves and cotton-compress warehouse row; stoneware and naval-stores jugs from the busiest 19th-century port in the state.
Access: Gray area.
Cape Fear River bottom below the ordinary high-water mark is state-owned public-trust land where removing historic artifacts is restricted and submerged bottoms are protected; the working waterfront uplands and old warehouse lots are private and need the owner's permission; state law protects archaeological sites and any unmarked graves.
