BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Maryland · approx. 39.6, -77.82 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1910s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Potomac River at the mouth of Conococheague Creek and a major Chesapeake and Ohio Canal town.

What turns up: Canal-basin and warehouse debris where the C&O Canal met the Potomac: boatmen's and tavern dumps, stoneware, clay pipes, and embossed local druggist, soda, and beer bottles near the old aqueduct, turning basin, and worker rows.

Access: Gray area.

The Potomac riverbed and the historic C&O Canal prism can hold protected submerged and archaeological resources; disturbing them is restricted and the canal corridor is federal parkland. Town uplands are private and need the landowner's permission.
