BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Virginia · approx. 37.53, -76.8 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1890s+ Sanborn-mapped town on York River at the Mattaponi and Pamunkey confluence

What turns up: Railroad-terminus and steamboat town on a narrow peninsula: wharf and hotel refuse with hutchinson sodas, whiskey and druggist bottles, oyster-trade debris, stoneware, and buttons where the two rivers meet the York.

Access: Gray area.

The York, Mattaponi, and Pamunkey river bottoms below mean-low-water are Commonwealth public-trust land where historic-artifact removal is restricted; the private town lots on the Sanborn footprint need the owner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites, and Native American land and reservations along the Pamunkey and Mattaponi carry additional protections.
