BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Vermont · approx. 44.15, -72.07 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Connecticut River at the Wells River confluence

What turns up: A rail-junction village at the Wells and Connecticut confluence, built out by 1884. Search the confluence banks and the old depot-and-hotel back lots for blob sodas, medicines and stoneware from the busy junction trade.

Access: Gray area.

The bed of the Connecticut River below the ordinary high-water mark is public-trust land with restricted artifact removal, and the river is an interstate boundary; the village lots and riverbanks are private and need permission. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
