Wareham

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Massachusetts · approx. 41.76, -70.72 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Wareham and Agawam rivers at the head of Buzzards Bay near the Cape Cod Canal

What turns up: Nail-works, iron-foundry and cranberry-town refuse: aqua and amber bottles, stoneware, foundry slag and cinder, and clay pipes around the tidal river mill sites and the bayhead village.

Access: Gray area.

Massachusetts colonial law extends private shoreownership to the low-tide line, so Wareham's tidal river and bayhead flats are largely private and need permission. Beds of the navigable rivers and Buzzards Bay are public trust where removing historic artifacts is restricted. Village and mill uplands are private, and state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
