BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Vermont · approx. 44.17, -73.25 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Otter Creek at the falls, tidewater to Lake Champlain

What turns up: A compact old city built around the Otter Creek falls and basin, once reachable by lake schooners. Search the mill-tailrace banks and the basin below the falls for early bottles, foundry slag and stoneware; back lots of the Main Street block are classic privy ground.

Access: Gray area.

The bed of Otter Creek below the ordinary high-water mark is state public-trust land where artifact removal is restricted; the falls-area banks and downtown lots are private and need the landowner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
