Valley City (Sheyenne River)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: North Dakota · approx. 46.92, -98.0 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Sheyenne River

What turns up: Bottle-era debris in the wooded Sheyenne valley and behind the early business district: embossed sodas and medicines, beer bottles, clay pipes, and stoneware; privies and dumps behind the 1880s-1890s blocks and the depot area shown on the Sanborn.

Access: Gray area.

Portions of the Sheyenne bed may be state public-trust land below the ordinary high-water mark with restrictions on artifact removal, but the river is largely bordered by private land requiring the owner's permission, and the townsite and banks are private. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
