BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Utah · approx. 40.53, -112.3 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1910s+ Sanborn-mapped town on At the mouth of Settlement Canyon on its creek, at the foot of the Oquirrh Mountains near the Bingham and Ophir mining and smelter district

What turns up: Early-1900s smelter-town refuse: bottling-works and druggist bottles, saloon and beer glass, smelter- and mine-supply debris, and canyon-creek and back-lot dumps behind the blocks on the 1910 and 1911 sheets, with older material possible on nearby ranch and mine sites.

Access: Gray area.

Settlement Canyon Creek bed below the ordinary high-water mark is state public-trust land with restrictions on removing historic material; town lots are private and need owner permission; the surrounding Oquirrh mining ground mixes patented claims with federal land subject to the Archaeological Resources Protection Act for sites over 100 years old.
