Where: South Dakota · approx. 44.49, -103.86 (vicinity only)
Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Spearfish Creek at the mouth of Spearfish Canyon on the northern Black Hills front
What turns up: Farm-and-mill-town refuse along Spearfish Creek: dug bottles, stoneware, and privy-pit fill behind the earliest Main Street row shown on the 1885 sheet, plus mill and irrigation-ditch hardware near the creek.
Access: Gray area.
Spearfish Creek's bed below the ordinary high-water mark is state public trust where artifact removal is restricted; the townsite is private property requiring permission, and the surrounding Black Hills National Forest is federal land where sites over 100 years old need a permit to disturb.
