Smyrna (Kent County)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Delaware · approx. 39.3, -75.6 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Head-of-navigation grain and produce port on the tidal Smyrna River (via Duck Creek landing) leading to Delaware Bay.

What turns up: Druggist and Hutchinson soda bottles, blob-top beers, canning jars, stoneware crocks, clay pipes, harness and wagon hardware, cut nails, and coins around the old landing, warehouse rows, and back yards of the 19th-century business district.

Access: Gray area.

Delaware framing: the bed of the navigable tidal Smyrna River below the mean high-water line is state-owned public-trust tideland where removing historic artifacts is restricted; the landing and townsite uplands are usually private and need the landowner's permission; state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials. Verify current rules first.
