BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Maryland · approx. 39.46, -77.75 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1920s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Potomac River and the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal a short way south of the village; Antietam Creek nearby.

What turns up: 19th-century village and canal-landing debris toward the Potomac and C&O Canal: stoneware, clay pipes, and embossed local druggist, soda, and beer bottles behind the old town lots, with battlefield-period surface material a legal minefield to avoid.

Access: Gray area.

The Potomac riverbed and the C&O Canal prism can hold protected submerged and archaeological resources; the canal corridor and adjacent battlefield are largely federal land where relic hunting is prohibited. Village uplands are private and need permission; state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
