BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Delaware · approx. 38.64, -75.61 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on River port and steamboat stop on the tidal Nanticoke River, a major artery to the Chesapeake; wharves handled grain, lumber, and passengers.

What turns up: Steamboat-era and bottle-era finds: druggist and soda bottles, beer and whiskey bottles, stoneware, clay pipes, steamboat and freight hardware, cut nails, buttons, and coins around the old Nanticoke wharves, warehouse rows, and hotel and store lots.

Access: Gray area.

Delaware framing: the bed of the navigable tidal Nanticoke River below the mean high-water line is state-owned public-trust tideland where artifact removal is restricted; the riverfront and townsite lots are generally private and need the owner's permission; state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials. Verify current rules before searching.
