Rogersville (near Holston River)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Tennessee · approx. 36.41, -83.01 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Holston River a few miles south of town, with Big Creek draining to it through the town

What turns up: Big Creek banks and Holston landings, plus privies behind one of the oldest town squares in East Tennessee: hand-blown bottles, stoneware jug shards, clay pipes, and 1880s to 1900s dump glass and intact medicine bottles.

Access: Gray area.

The Holston streambed below the ordinary high-water mark is state public-trust bottomland where artifact removal is restricted; the town lots and river ground are private and need permission. Archaeological sites and unmarked burials are protected.
