Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on James River at the fall line
What turns up: Major fall-line capital: deep and layered urban dumps with blob-top and hutchinson sodas, local mineral-water and druggist bottles, bitters, stoneware, buttons, and coins along the James River canal frontage, Shockoe Bottom, and old commercial lots.
Access: Gray area.
The James River bed below the ordinary low-water line is Commonwealth public-trust bottom where taking historic artifacts is restricted; the private city lots and canal-side parcels on the Sanborn sheets require the owner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites, and Civil War defensive and industrial sites around the city may be off-limits.
