BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Virginia · approx. 36.84, -76.3 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Elizabeth River (west branch), Hampton Roads / Chesapeake

What turns up: Old naval-yard town: shipyard-worker and tavern refuse with hutchinson sodas, druggist and bitters bottles, Navy and uniform buttons, stoneware, and pipe stems along the Elizabeth River bank and behind Olde Towne lots.

Access: Gray area.

The Elizabeth River bottom below mean-low-water is public-trust land owned by the Commonwealth and collecting historic artifacts there is restricted; the private Olde Towne lots and yards on the Sanborn footprint need the owner's consent. Archaeological sites are protected by state law, and proximity to the historic Gosport/Norfolk Navy Yard means federal jurisdiction may apply to naval material.
