BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Virginia · approx. 36.85, -76.29 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Elizabeth River at Hampton Roads, off the Chesapeake Bay

What turns up: Deep colonial-through-Victorian port city: dumped hotel and saloon bottles, blob-top sodas, blackglass ale, stoneware ginger beer, clay pipes, Navy buttons, and coins along old wharf lots and filled waterfront blocks off the Elizabeth River.

Access: Gray area.

In Virginia the bed of the Elizabeth River and Hampton Roads below the ordinary high-water and mean-low-water line is Commonwealth-owned public-trust bottom where removing historic artifacts is restricted; the built-up bank lots and uplands shown on the Sanborn sheets are private and require the current landowner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites, and heavy Civil War and naval activity here means submerged or buried military material may trigger added restrictions.
