Mobile (Mobile Bay / Mobile River Gulf port)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Alabama · approx. 30.69, -88.04 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Head of Mobile Bay at the mouth of the Mobile River; the antebellum-to-1900 Gulf cotton and import port with a busy commercial waterfront and wharves.

What turns up: Deep-water port trash: English and Continental case gin, applied-lip whiskey and bitters, imported ceramics, patent medicines, and early Southern blob and Hutchinson sodas around the old wharf and warehouse blocks.

Access: Gray area.

Alabama framing: the bed of Mobile Bay and the Mobile River below the ordinary high-water mark is state-owned public-trust bottom where removing historic artifacts is restricted; the wharves, banks, and uplands are almost all privately or port-owned and need the landowner's permission; state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials. Verify current rules with authorities before digging or diving.
