BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Georgia · approx. 33.08, -83.23 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Oconee River

What turns up: Early applied-lip and pontiled bottles, druggist and patent-medicine vials, blob-top sodas, and stoneware at the Oconee River landing below the old capitol town, where flatboats and steamers loaded cotton at the foot of the main streets.

Access: Gray area.

The Oconee River bed below the ordinary high-water mark is state-owned public-trust bottom where artifact removal is restricted; the town bank and landing lots are private and require the landowner's consent; state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
