The Kansas River is navigable, so its bed below the ordinary high-water mark is state-owned public trust where removing historic artifacts is restricted. The Big Blue and the townsite banks and uplands are usually private and need the landowner's permission. Kansas law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
