BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Delaware · approx. 38.77, -75.14 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1890s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Historic pilot and fishing town on the Lewes and Rehoboth Canal at the mouth of Delaware Bay, one of the oldest settlements on the Delaware coast.

What turns up: Maritime and bottle-era finds: druggist and soda bottles, blob-top beers, olive-glass and case-bottle shards, clay pipes, redware and stoneware, ship and net hardware, buttons, and coins around the old canal front, pilot houses, fishery sites, and colonial town lots.

Access: Gray area.

Delaware framing: the bay foreshore, beach, and canal bed below the mean high-water line are state-owned public-trust tidelands where removing historic artifacts is restricted; the town lots and uplands are usually private and need the landowner's permission; state law protects archaeological sites, shipwrecks, and unmarked burials. Confirm current rules before digging.
