What turns up: Old levee and steamboat-landing dumps: black glass ale and whiskey bottles, pontil-scarred flasks, applied-lip sodas, salt-glazed stoneware jugs, clay pipe bowls, military brass and buttons from Fort Leavenworth freighting traffic, and dropped coins along the graded riverfront.
Access: Gray area.
The Missouri is a navigable river in Kansas, so its bed below the ordinary high-water mark is state-owned public trust where removing historic artifacts is restricted. The levee, banks, and uplands of the townsite are typically private and require the landowner's permission. Kansas law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials; leave any suspected burial or site undisturbed and report it.
