Lead (Gold Run, head of Deadwood Gulch)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: South Dakota · approx. 44.35, -103.77 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Gold Run Creek at the head of Deadwood Gulch; the Homestake lode-mining town

What turns up: Hardrock company-town refuse around the Homestake works and the crowded miners' housing: dug bottles, ceramics, mine and mill hardware, carbide and blasting-cap tins, and privy fill on the steep lots shown on the 1885 sheet.

Access: Gray area.

Gold Run Creek's bed below the ordinary high-water mark is state public trust with restricted artifact removal; the town sits on patented Homestake mining-claim and private ground requiring owner permission, with federal protection over sites older than 100 years on any adjacent National Forest land.
