Why this spot: 1890s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Stillwater River, near Flathead Lake
What turns up: 1890s-1910s railroad, saloon and mercantile bottles and dump glass along the Stillwater and Ashley Creek margins
Access: Gray area.
This is a smaller stream whose navigability, and therefore state ownership of the bed, is less clear, so treat the bed as possibly state owned and off limits for digging or artifact removal. Stream-access law permits recreation up to the high-water mark but not artifact removal. The banks and townsite lots are usually private and need the landowner's permission. On federal land the Archaeological Resources Protection Act bars disturbing sites over 100 years old without a permit.
