Hawthorne, NV: Walker Lake rail-junction town

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Nevada · approx. 38.52, -118.62 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1890s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Walker Lake

What turns up: 1880s-1900s rail-junction saloon, freighting, soda and store bottles near the north shore of Walker Lake and the old depot district

Access: Gray area.

The bed of Walker Lake below the ordinary high-water mark is state-owned public land, and removing historic artifacts there can run afoul of Nevada's antiquities protections. The old townsite and dry ground above the high-water line are generally private and need the owner's permission. Surrounding open desert is likely federal BLM land, where disturbing a site older than 100 years without a permit violates the federal Archaeological Resources Protection Act. Confirm land status and get permission before digging.
