BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Virginia · approx. 37.03, -76.35 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Hampton River / Hampton Roads on the Chesapeake Bay

What turns up: One of the oldest continuous English settlements: oyster-house and waterfront dumps yielding blob sodas, patent-medicine and whiskey bottles, seafood-cannery debris, stoneware crocks, clay pipes, and buttons near the Hampton River wharves.

Access: Gray area.

The Hampton River and Hampton Roads bottom below the ordinary low-water line is Commonwealth public-trust land where relic removal is restricted; upland town lots on the Sanborn sheets are private and need permission. State archaeological-site protections apply, and Fort Monroe and other federal/Civil War ground nearby is off-limits to relic hunting entirely.
