Greenwood (Yazoo and Tallahatchie confluence)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Mississippi · approx. 33.52, -90.18 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1890s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Yazoo River at its head, where the Tallahatchie and Yalobusha join

What turns up: Early 1890s druggist and soda bottles, stoneware crocks, clay marbles and harness hardware in the old cotton-row privy pits, plus glass and ceramic shards in the river bank cuts at the confluence.

Access: Gray area.

The beds of the navigable Yazoo and Tallahatchie below the ordinary high-water mark are state-owned public trust where removing historic artifacts is restricted; the riverbanks and town uplands are usually private and need the landowner's permission, and state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
