BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Massachusetts · approx. 42.62, -70.66 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Gloucester Harbor and Cape Ann Atlantic shore

What turns up: Deep-sea fishing and schooner port refuse: stoneware ale and beer bottles, dark olive-green case gin and rum bottles, cod-liver-oil and patent-medicine flasks, clay tavern pipes, and galley crockery along the inner harbor and Rocky Neck waterfront.

Access: Gray area.

Under the Massachusetts colonial ordinance private waterfront ownership commonly extends to the low-tide line, so most Gloucester Harbor tidal flats are privately held and need the owner's permission. Below the low-water mark and in navigable water the state holds the beds in public trust and removing historic artifacts is restricted. Townsite uplands are private, and state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
