Glendive, MT: Yellowstone River steamboat and rail landing

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Montana · approx. 47.11, -104.71 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Yellowstone River

What turns up: 1880s-1900s steamboat and railroad saloon, freight and household bottles along the Yellowstone levee and old landing

Access: Gray area.

River bed below the ordinary high-water mark is state owned and removing historic artifacts from it is restricted. Montana's stream-access law lets you use the water and bed up to the high-water mark for recreation but does not authorize digging or removing artifacts. The banks and townsite uplands are usually private, so get the landowner's permission. Where the ground is federal (BLM or Forest Service), the Archaeological Resources Protection Act bars disturbing sites over 100 years old without a permit.
