BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: South Carolina · approx. 33.38, -79.29 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on On the Sampit River at the head of Winyah Bay, where the Pee Dee, Waccamaw, and Black rivers reach the sea.

What turns up: Rice-port bottle dumps, English case gin and ale bottles, ballast stone, and stoneware along the old Sampit riverfront wharves.

Access: Gray area.

The bed of Winyah Bay and the tidal Sampit below the ordinary high-water mark are state-owned public trust with protected submerged antiquities, so bottom recovery is restricted. Waterfront lots and uplands are private and require permission, and state law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
