Galveston

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Texas · approx. 29.3, -94.8 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1880s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Galveston Bay and the Gulf of Mexico; the island port fronts the harbor channel and Offatts Bayou

What turns up: Pre-1900 privy pits and cistern fills behind the Strand commercial row yielding blob-top beers, Hutchinson sodas, and imported case gin from the busy cotton-port merchants; wharf-front dump scatters of ceramics and clay pipes; storm-layer debris from the 1900 hurricane sealing older deposits

Access: Gray area.

The Gulf beaches carry public access under the Texas Open Beaches Act, but the state owns the submerged tidelands and beach and removing historic artifacts there is restricted; the Antiquities Code of Texas protects sites on state-owned land and submerged bottoms. Dry townsite lots on the island are private and need the landowner's permission.
