Fort Gibson (Grand River military post and steamboat head of navigation)

BOTTLE DIGGING GRAY AREA CONFIRMED

Where: Oklahoma · approx. 35.8, -95.25 (vicinity only)

Why this spot: 1890s+ Sanborn-mapped town on Grand (Neosho) River near its mouth at the Arkansas River

What turns up: The historic landing and warehouse ground along the Grand River below the old fort and townsite; expect 1870s to early 1900s military-era bottle glass, black-glass and olive-amber ale bottles, ceramic and stoneware shards, cut nails, buttons, and dropped hardware where riverbank erosion and old privy zones are exposed.

Access: Gray area.

The Grand and Arkansas river beds below the ordinary high-water mark are state-owned public trust land where artifact removal is restricted. Fort Gibson sits within the Cherokee Nation reservation, and adjacent tribal or allotment land requires separate tribal permission. The old fort grounds are a protected historic site; townsite uplands are usually private and need the landowner's permission. State law protects archaeological sites and unmarked burials.
